The Hair Life Cycle
Anagen
The growth phase, where derma papilla send nutrients and growth signals to the hair follicles. The longer this period, the longer hair has time to grow. As we age, the anagen growth phase declines due to increased levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and decreased levels of IGF-1 and microRNA31.
Catagen
Derma papilla begin separating from the hair follicle, signaling that the growth phase is over (triggered by an increase in microRNA22 production transmitters, which increase as we age).
Telogen
The hair follicle goes into hibernation.
Exogen
Derma papilla begin forming new hairs, a process that weakens and slows with age. Over time, DHT will shrink the hair follicle until hair can no longer grow.
