After years of teasing, flat ironing, bleaching, highlighting and curling my fine hair, 2020 was the year everything came to a head. With no access to my hair salon, I had to remove my beloved hair extensions solo and finally face all my fine hair fears.

Nearly two years later, I've decided to ditch the extensions for good, but my quest for naturally thick, long, healthy hair continues. Read on for my ENSO Overnight Hair Mask review — plus, find out what products you really should be using to bring out the best in your hair.

Me and My Mane

My hair has always been flat and a bit lifeless. I bleached my mane in my twenties and had fun piling on funky blue, pink and purple colors. However, in my thirties, my mission changed. I craved long, thick hair, so I turned to extensions. Although the extensions gave me the look I wanted, they caused serious damage. My scalp felt the strain and my real hair became thinner, weaker and finer than ever. And since I took my extensions out, it's been hard to feel confident.

But it's not all bad. Getting to know my natural hair has helped me accept its weaknesses and look for ways to enhance its strengths. My hair is fine, but there's a lot of it, and it can get frizzy and fluffy in certain conditions — especially in the winter.

Why Use a Hair Mask?

If you've never used a mask, you might be wondering why you should. Well, to start, a good hair mask can transform overly dry hair with frayed ends. The problem for me is that most traditional hair masks weigh down fine hair and leave it looking greasy and limp, so I've always avoided them.

Traditional masks can also, quite literally, mask issues if they're made with silicones. My hair has definitely looked shiny after using some masks — but after a day or two, it returned to its previous state, and sometimes, it's actually looked worse. Aggressive formulas made with harsh ingredients can ravage hair in the long term.

Then, I learned about the new ENSO Overnight Restoring Hair Mask. It's different from the other masks I've used before. It's silicone and sulfate-free and designed to adapt to the hair's needs on contact to produce beautifully soft and deeply hydrated tresses. It also helps seal hair cuticles for a glossy, glassy appearance and makes hair look smoother, less tangled and more manageable.

In fact, each product in the ENSO collection — shampoo, conditioner and overnight restoring hair mask — is powered by Karmatin™, a microencapsulated vegan b-silk™ protein that bonds to the hair follicles and provides strands with the perfect amount of moisture, volume and protection while enhancing color and shine. As a bonus, the shampoo and conditioner are available in different formulations for fine, medium and thick hair and are all perfect to use in tandem with the overnight mask.

My Review: ENSO Overnight Restoring Hair Mask

I'll admit, I was slightly apprehensive about reviewing the ENSO Overnight Restoring Hair Mask. Most masks cling to my fine strands, leaving my frail mane looking greasy and needing a second shampoo. But after reading about all the benefits of the mask, I decided to give it a go.

When I first opened the container, I was greeted by its gorgeous, relaxing scent. The blend of ylang-ylang, jasmine and yuzu is specially blended to boost mood, and from the first sniff, it had me hooked!

I shampooed my tresses and, after rinsing, dispensed a quarter-sized amount of the mask from scalp to ends. It didn't feel sticky, and it didn't take long to apply. The easy application was great! I just slathered it on and continued with my nighttime ritual.

Because the mask is an overnight formula, I waited for my damp hair to dry slightly before placing a cotton T-shirt over my pillow to reduce friction while I slept. I tend to twist and turn in my sleep, which isn't the best for my hair. My cotton T-shirt worked fine, but you could further enhance the treatment by using a hair wrap. The ENSO Overnight Hair Wrap is made from 100% bamboo cotton to fight frizz, reduce breakage and intensify the conditioning benefits.

My Results

Even without the wrap, when I woke up, my hair felt soft to the touch and, dare I say, thicker. Honestly, my hair felt denser and less fluffy after just one use. I went out for cocktails with friends (because I was feeling all fancy with my good hair), and both of them asked whether I'd had my hair done — impressive!

I know that consistency is the key to any good hair wellness routine. So I've been using the mask once a week and have seen my hair grow shiner over the course of four weeks.

Overall, it's the change in my hair's appearance that has really impressed me; it truly feels and looks smoother and softer without feeling greasy and weighed down! And while I don't usually feel comfortable using hot tools on my heat-damaged hair, I'm now OK with doing so occasionally because of how much the condition of my hair has improved.

Another major plus for me is that this overnight mask is so easy to use. I just apply to my hair before I sleep, and voila! — I wake up to healthy, softer-looking hair. It's an easy, reliable solution for people like me who don't have a lot of time to spare for extra self-care. And the fact that it's plant-powered makes it absolutely perfect!
