How to Care for Medium Hair
Like fine and thick hair, medium hair has its own set of needs. And while it can be challenging to know how to best care for your medium hair, that doesn't mean you have to settle for the wrong haircuts and products that leave your tresses looking less than their best.
VEGAMOUR spoke with the experts about how to properly care for this hair texture — plus, what products you really should be using to bring out the best in your medium hair.
Do You Have Medium Hair?
To determine the hair strand type of individual strands, hold one of your hairs up to the light. Fine hair is hard to see, while coarse or thick hair is wirier or dense-looking. Medium hair strands fall somewhere in between and usually contain all three hair structure parts: the medulla, the cortex and the cuticle.
Your medium hair could be any hair type — wavy hair, straight hair, coily or curly hair. Your medium hair could also have varying needs, from the roots of the hair being more healthy to perhaps a more dry area in the middle of the hair shaft or on the ends. Medium hair textures require specialized care to manage these varying needs. You may be more focused on the hair type like wavy hair or curly hair — or a hair need, like managing frizz or split ends. However, to keep your medium texture of hair healthy, all it takes is a specialized hair care line that delivers the perfect amounts of moisture, volume and protection right where your hair needs it.
Specialized Hair Care for Medium Hair
Support for your medium hair begins with the care you give your hair, such as the following:
- Products you use to cleanse, condition and nourish
- Blow-drying or air drying
- Straightening or styling
- Types of scalp treatments or hair masks
But it's not only about the products and methods you use, it's also about the timing. Here's what you need to know about both when it comes to caring for medium hair.
Daily
You should only shampoo and condition daily if your hair needs it. Otherwise, shampoo and condition two to three times a week. Brush your hair each day to add volume, increase blood flow to the scalp and remove any tangles. Use a hairbrush that does not get caught in the hair or break the hair. Ionized hair brushes can be good for adding hair volume while reducing breakage.
Two to Three Times a Week
Shampoo and condition the hair with your favorite shampoo and conditioner from VEGAMOUR, which utilizes haircare "smart" technology to identify the needs of your texture of hair and quickly address them without adding unwanted weight. These intuitive duos help to add shine plus ideal amounts of volume and nourishment — all without toxic chemicals, phthalates or silicones that could build up on your hair.
It bears mentioning that you should allow your hair to air dry rather than blow-drying when you can. And if air drying doesn't work well for you, consider using a dry shampoo with gentle hair brushing in lieu of shampooing. Though VEGAMOUR shampoos and conditioners are formulated to be gentle enough for daily use, dry shampooing can help give your hair a rest from heat drying.
Once a Week or as Needed
Treat your medium hair with deep conditioning hair mask that you can use weekly. This treatment is deeply nourishing for your hair and scalp. It hydrates, reduces frizz, helps restore your hair from heat styling or color-treating and restores the lustrous, healthy appearance of your hair.
Apply to clean, towel-dried hair and leave on as directed. Then, rinse and style as usual.
It is also recommended to get regular trims, at least every eight to 10 weeks, to prevent breakage at the ends of your hair.

Get a Flattering Haircut for Medium Hair
To get the best out of your medium hair texture, get a flattering haircut that's easily supported by the texture and type of your hair. Your stylist can help you select a cut that fits your face and hair type and considers any curl patterns. For curly or wavy hair types, consider a layered cut that brings out the best of your curl pattern.
Deconstructed Bob
The classic deconstructed bob adds loose layers to perk up your limp hair and give it more movement. This on-trend style works well on medium hair of any texture. This type of haircut helps to accentuate the curl pattern of wavy hair types but also lightens up straight hair, adding volume and making the hair easier to style. If you need to reduce frizz, rub a little bit of styling product between your hands and apply it to the ends only before styling. Use a "scrunching" technique with your hands or a diffuser to deepen the movement of wavy hair.
Wolf Cut
One trendy haircut taking TikTok by storm, the "Wolf Cut," is perfect for medium hair types, especially those with very straight or slightly wavy hair. This modern take on the reverse-elevation haircut has been around since hairstylist Paul McGregor gave the famous "shag" haircut, as it was called then, to actress Jane Fonda. Now, the updated #wolfcut, set with a large-barreled curling iron, is fresh and stylish, ready for the runway, the workplace or a night out with your friends.

Styling Tips for Medium Hair
VEGAMOUR spoke with Lauren Udoh, hair creative director of WigReports.com, who gave some expert tips on working with medium hair and keeping it healthy. She said to invest in a dryer with ionic conditioning to minimize the damage done by static charges.
Lauren also gave some styling tips to prevent splitting or damage that can make hair look frizzy, unstyled and unhealthy. She recommended combing out tangles with a wide-tooth comb before washing to prevent excessive friction that will lead to more breakage and avoiding excessive heat styling.
Lauren also recommended using lightweight products. VEGAMOUR shampoos and conditioners are powered by Karmatin™, a vegan keratin protein that delivers only what your hair needs without all the weight you've been battling from other hair products.
