Summer-Proof Your Hair: 5 Tips To Protect From the Sun, Sea & Sand

It’s the season we’ve all been waiting for. But truth be told, a summer’s worth of salty air, hot sun, and cannonballs in the pool can do a number on our hair. Before you hit the beach, read up on how to keep your locks safe and strong, so you can have healthy hair that shines just as bright as you do.

1. Wear a Hat

This tip shouldn’t be new news here, but the easiest way to protect your hair and head from harmful UV rays is a protective hat or cap. We’re loving a wide-brimmed straw hat, which does double duty protecting your face from potentially cancer-causing sun damage. For an effortless sporty look, the trendy “dad hat”  pairs oh-so-nice with a loose braid and cute sunnies.[1]

2. SPF Your Scalp

Suncare doesn’t just stop at your forehead. Even though your scalp is covered by hair, it’s still at risk from UVA/UVB damage from the sun. These rays can make hair appear brittle and thin, while the skin on your scalp is just as susceptible to harm like the rest of your body. We suggest using any SPF product with zinc oxide and be sure to rub SPF into your scalp versus spraying product onto your roots. Looking for a more natural alternative? That’s where we come in. Plant-derived oils, featured in our products, are proven helpful in protecting and calming the scalp post-sun.[2]

3. Switch it Up

Whether you rock a mean pony or flawless braids, it’s important to let your hair flow free now and then. A condition called traction alopecia is caused by excessive pulling on the hair which in turn can damage the root and lead to permanent hair thinning. Doris Day, expert hair loss dermatologist explains to Allure.com, “Tight braiding, tight ponytails, or hair pulling are all underlying causes of traction alopecia.”[3] So, swapping your signature style for a silky soft headband can give your locks some much-needed room to breathe.

Make sure to take extra special care of the sensitive parts of your hair, especially around your hairline. A nutrient-packed serum, like our GRO Hair Serum, boosts hair wellness.

4. Rinse, Nourish, Repeat

Oh, do we LOVE days at the pool, but they can seriously take a toll on our hair. Before perfecting that swan dive, we suggest pre-washing with fresh water to reduce soaking in chlorine and other harsh chemicals. Then, lather your locks with a conditioning treatment for extra protection.

5. Hydrate

Sounds like a no brainer, right? Right! To prevent your hair from drying out from scorching temps and salty air, make sure you’re drinking plenty of water. H2o is nature’s best kept beauty secret and experts recommend drinking 8 glasses of 8oz each day for healthy, hydrated hair and skin. Sweeten the deal by adding antioxidant-rich fruit like berries and lemons for a refreshing twist and an extra hydrating dose of hair-loving nutrients.
