Dry shampoo is an essential. Find a good one, and you're hooked. No time for a hair wash post-gym? Hair looking a bit limp and lifeless? Dry shampoo to the rescue.

But what happens when your faithful hair savior gets recalled due to toxic ingredients? Find out what to do if your dry shampoo is on the recalled products list and what toxin-free, plant-based dry shampoo you should be using instead.

Why Have Dry Shampoo Sprays Been Recalled?

After tests revealed unexpected levels of benzene in dry shampoos, liquid conditioners and more, a major consumer goods corporation, P&G, announced a voluntary dry shampoo recall. The corporation and the associated brands don't believe daily exposure to the levels of benzene detected would cause adverse health risks (based on the exposure modeling and cancer risk assessments published by the Environmental Protection Agency). However, those with affected products are advised to discard them.

Here's a list of recalled products, which includes dry shampoos from a number of popular brands.

What Is Benzene?

Benzene is a naturally occurring chemical produced in volcanoes and forest fires, but it doesn't mean it's good just because it's natural. The chemical is also found in gasoline, crude oil and cigarette smoke, which, as we all know, aren't the best for our bodies. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that nearly everyone is exposed to benzene daily due to the low levels we breathe in from tobacco smoke, motor vehicle exhaust and industrial emissions daily. In addition, it's a chemical commonly used in the production of detergents, plastics, paints and glue — but (and it's a big but) it's not an intentional ingredient in personal-care products. Why? Because excessive exposure to benzene can trigger life-changing adverse health consequences.

As recognized in the recall statement released, excessive benzene exposure can occur through the skin and via inhalation, leading to cancers, including blood cancer of the bone marrow, leukemia and other blood disorders.

"Following recent reports that indicated traces of benzene in some aerosol spray products, we began a review of our total portfolio of aerosol products," the statement reads. "While benzene is not an ingredient in any of our products, our review showed that unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can. We detected benzene in aerosol dry shampoo spray products and aerosol dry conditioner spray products."

Benzene is a volatile solvent that can quickly penetrate the cell membrane and bloodstream, so spraying it directly onto the scalp isn't the best idea.

What Dry Shampoo to Use Instead

It's easy to mindlessly buy and use a dry shampoo — until a recall happens. Then, you begin to wonder what unknown chemical ingredients are you spritzing on your hair and scalp at the first sign of grease?

The good news is that VEGAMOUR products contain no known toxins, and each plant-based product has been scientifically proven to get results — all without the use of harsh, damaging ingredients. In addition, we take a 360° approach to hair wellness, which means no (chemical-induced) quick fixes that lead to long-term problems are included. Instead, working in tandem with the power of nature and the lens of science, each product, including GRO Dry Shampoo, is carefully formulated to help you achieve beautiful, fuller-looking, gorgeous hair.

The entirely plant-based, best-selling dry shampoo has been made using the same propriety blend of phyto-active ingredients found in the hugely popular GRO Hair Serum. The gentle, lightweight spray has been developed to help balance the scalp and volumize and support a healthy hair ecosystem. And if you love the texturization a dry shampoo offers, this formula does it without clogging up your scalp and leaving you feeling itchy.

The USDA organic rice hulls in the spray absorb any excess oils, sweat and odors your hair accumulates, leaving your strands looking and feeling fresh. Plus, there's no talc in the vegan blend. Instead, you'll find mung bean, red clover and kaolin clay, which work together to keep hair looking its very best.

Additionally, we consider our eco-footprint at every step, making sure the propellant offers even, effective distribution. Plus, there's no strong synthetic fragrance to offend your senses. Instead, the delightful and all-natural bergamot scent is pleasantly subtle.

Dry shampoo is essential to a good hair care routine, so whether it's recalled or not, why risk your health by using products that you can't always trust? With VEGAMOUR, you won't have to. The integrity of each ingredient used is guaranteed, and the cruelty-free, vegan and completely plant-based dry shampoo will help keep your hair and scalp in peak condition!
